The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery & Obstetric Service were relocated in new, state-of-the-art facility in 2002. With over 5500 births per year, RPA Women & Babies is the busiest maternity service in NSW. The nursery is funded for 10 level 3 beds (Ventilation) and 24 level 2 beds (High-dependency and Special care). There are around 700 admissions annually, of which about 200 are level 3 and the remainder level 2.

About 50 were born at other hospitals and were transferred to RPA by the NSW Newborn & Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS). The mothers of about 200 of the in-born babies were booked at other hospitals, but transferred to RPA before the baby's birth, because of complications of pregnancy. On average we care for about 50 babies <1000gm and 140 babies <1500gm annually.
